Why Visual Art? Why Photography?

"Caroline Mueller's lifelong awareness of God and her deep appreciation for the beauty of His creation and His creatures, especially people -- each one having been made in His image -- inevitably led her to end up behind the lens of a camera. Seeing beauty all around her is characteristic of Caroline, as is her passion for justice and truth. The camera does not lie. Caroline’s love for Photojournalism is evident - and for telling the stories that she sees - of either the amazing beauty in nature, of families, of children, of the drifter, of the lonely . . . or in giving us glimpses of the pain and suffering that come though poverty, oppression, disaster, or loss. Caroline has a keen eye for capturing images in the natural setting. Caroline communicates with her subjects and draws them out to a point where they “forget that there is a camera between them.” Caroline strives for honesty, integrity and passion. Her passion for life, for truth, and for beauty inspires her to capture the heart of whatever is her subject as she shoots.

Caroline's love for Photography began as a child. From her youth, Caroline’s grandfather, a mechanical engineer who was also a skilled amateur photographer interested in photography as a hobby, taught Caroline as he enjoyed the time spent working in his darkroom. As he taught Caroline along the way, he stressed the importance of lighting and early emphasized to her the grammar of perspective, form, shape, line, and structure. Caroline was fascinated with the camera's ability to capture a moment that would last for a lifetime.

Caroline Mueller received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art with a Concentration in Photography from The Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. It was there at SMU that she studied with photographers Charles DeBus, Debra Hunter, and others. Caroline was influenced by photographers Michael Kenna, Steve McCurry, Annie Leibowitz, Dorothea Lange, Ansel Adams (who was a friend and mentor of her professor, Charles DeBus), Albert Renger-Patzsch, and also by her own father, the late Herbert Clem Mueller, M.D."
